One in seven Brits would buy a home with a stranger

Feb 24, 2018
Buying a first home with a complete stranger wouldn't be a problem for 14% of young Britons - particularly if their new acquaintance was a pet-loving doctor. Although, worryingly, that does extend to 4% being prepared to move in with 'someone they met in the pub'. When asked to share their top criteria for their ideal home-buying partner, over 50% of the 2,000 surveyed said their perfect co-buyer wouldn't have body odour, but would be clean and tidy and pay bills on time. The ability to do DIY around the place was ideal for two in five young adults, while 37% wanted to purchase a property with pet-lovers. Nearly one in four considered meat-eaters the perfect co-buyer - which might explain why 18% were keen on living with someone who 'cooks a cracking roast'. Other traits of a perfect co-owner: • Loves a good BBC drama (19%) and has a Netflix account (16%) • Earns over 50k a year (18%) and is calm under pressure (42%) • Is fun loving (36%) and does not snore (16%) Top 3 takeaways • 80% of young Britons (18-40) would buy a first home with someone who isn't their life partner • 1 in 7 would purchase a property with a stranger • 83% fear they may never afford to buy a home
