Former Chiswick Works site hosts 70th anniversary Routemaster event

Feb 19, 2024
The Routemaster Association will stage a much-anticipated event in Chiswick on the site of the former London Transport Chiswick Works. The two-day event - RM70 - will be held on 20th and 21st July 2024. The occasion marks the 70th anniversary of the first Routemaster bus.
The inaugural event RM50 was held in 2004, when 98 Routemasters were lined up in Finsbury Park, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first appearance of RM1. The celebration was repeated in 2014 for RM60 for the 60th anniversary, with 136 buses attending.
EVENT DATE: 20th and 21st July 2024
VENUE: the former London Transport Chiswick Works, 566 Chiswick High Road, W4 5AN
John Ward, Routemaster Association Chairman: “The historical connection between this site and the development and introduction of the Routemaster bus cannot be overstated. Chiswick has excellent facilities with easy access for both owners and enthusiasts, and offers a new perspective for the event”.
The Routemaster has been voted one of Britain's top 10 design icons, a list which includes Concorde, Mine, Supermarine Spitfire, London tube map, World Wide Web, and the red telephone box. In 2009, the Routemaster was selected by the Royal Mail for the British Design Classics commemorative postage stamp issue. In the late 2000s, work began on a new bus inspired by the Routemaster's traditional design, which entered service in 2012.
