Chiswick House rose garden becomes first ‘Silent Space’
Jul 15, 2025
After many months of preparation, co-design and planting, Chiswick House & Gardens Trust has finally designated its Rosary to be enjoyed as a Silent Space for all visitors. The initiative aligns with its commitment to community service, ensuring free access to Hounslow residents and the wider west London area.
FREE ACCESS URBAN SETTING
Silent Space is a nationwide enterprise started by garden writer Liz Ware which marks out biodiverse, nature-rich green spaces as places for reflection and contemplation. The Silent Space in Chiswick is the first to be opened in England in a public garden, that’s free to enter for everybody, every day.
THE ROSARY AND ROSES OF CHISWICK
The proximity to recently rejuvenated woodland areas, developed to boost biodiversity and support wildlife, was selected after research suggesting benefits to mental health from quiet reflection in natural settings.
SCENT, COLOUR AND BIRDSONG
The space offers visitors the opportunity to take a break from the noise and chatter of daily life to enjoy the rustling of leaves and the sounds of the birds and wildlife. Inspired by French gardens, the Chiswick House Rose Garden was created for scent, colour and pleasure and for the Trust's collection of over 140 heritage roses to thrive.
