Where to Live

Bedford Park, W4

Bedford Park, long considered a prototype for later garden cities and suburbs, owes its origin to the Aesthetic Movement of the 1870’s. In 1875 Jonathan Carr purchased 24 acres of land and commissioned E.W.Godwin and Coe & Robinson to build Phase I (1875-1876).
In 1877 Norman Shaw was commissioned as the estate architect and created most of the architectural character that we appreciate today. Phase II (1877-1879).
In 1880 more land was purchased by Carr.  Shaw’s protégé E.J.May completed Phase III (1880-1886).
Bedford Park is considered to be the most desirable residential area in Chiswick and one of the most desirable in West London. Bedford Park offers a blend of timeless traditional architecture with an artistic flair. Its tree lined streets have been enjoyed by many famous people including W.B.Yeats, William Terriss, Florence Farr and Camille Pissarro.
Located just to the north of Turnham Green Station, The Bedford Park conservation area runs from Abinger Road to the east, Esmond Road to the west, Flanders Road marks the area’s southern border and Fielding Road is officially the last road within the conservation area to the north. Just 23 roads make up the Bedford Park area.
